Dr. Mike Haynie, executive director and founder of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University, is among a group of exceptional thought leaders at Disney’s Heroes Work Here ‘Veterans Institute’ workshop. Being held today, Nov. 14, in Orlando, Fla. the event is co-sponsored by the Disney Institute and Heroes Work Here program.
Program highlights include keynote speeches from Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger and First Lady Michelle Obama. The pair, and others, encouraged employers to learn the benefits of hiring a veteran, and discussed strategies that will aid veterans in making a smooth transition back into the civilian workforce. Obama began work with the veteran community in 2011, launching Joining Forces with Dr. Jill Biden to find ways to connect veterans with jobs after returning from service.
The workshop will also feature an expert resource panel discussion that includes panelists from the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Labor, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
In 2012, Haynie and the IVMF published the “Business Case for Hiring a Veteran: Beyond the Clichés,” providing specific reasons that employers should hire individuals with a military background. This business case grew into two major IVMF resources, a guide to leading practices in veteran employment and an online toolkit for employers. Haynie’s keynote speech will discuss best practices that employers should adopt when creating strategies for integrating veterans into their workforce.
“The IVMF is honored to share the stage today with the First Lady, Bob Iger, and so many other thought leaders advancing the cause of America’s veterans and their families. Events like this are truly a mark of our nation’s commitment supporting its returning heroes as they chart out the next steps of their post-service life,” said Haynie.
The Veterans Institute workshop is another effort of Disney’s Heroes Work Here initiative to hire, train and support veterans returning from service. The workshop is an all-day event and a resource for employers that will teach small and mid-sized businesses how to build an effective veteran hiring program of their own.
Today’s event will continue into the evening, concluding with a keynote address from ABC’s Bob Woodruff, founder of the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which provides aid to organizations that support injured servicemen and women following their return home, including support to the IVMF.
