Conference organized by Institute for Veterans and Military Families, with support of U.S. Small Business Administration and JPMorgan Chase & Co.
Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE), the nation’s leading entrepreneurship training program for women veterans, active duty service women, and female partners and spouses, is hosting a regional entrepreneurship training conference in New Orleans, La., January 16-18, 2015.
During the conference, nearly 200 innovative women will learn business best practices, build networks, and develop their entrepreneurial skills as they seek to launch or grow sustainable business ventures.
The V-WISE program was created through a partnership between the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (IVMF)—the first interdisciplinary national institute in higher education focused on the social, economic, education and policy issues impacting veterans and their families post-service.
Attendees at the New Orleans conference will receive more than 40 hours of instruction from prominent business owners, leadership consultants, educators, veterans and other experts who will help shape their development as entrepreneurs. Sessions during the conference will focus on business planning, marketing, accounting/finance, operations/production, human resources and work-life balance.
V-WISE offers two parallel tracks of training: a growth track for participants who have already launched a small business, and a start-up track for potential entrepreneurs. Participants start with a 15-day online course before attending the regional conferences. Ongoing support and mentorship is delivered to graduates of the program through a robust, comprehensive network of mentors and partners.
“Women veterans and military spouses bring a unique set of skills, traits and experiences to entrepreneurship. Whether balancing military careers or military family life, these women have the perseverance and adaptability needed to realize their business dreams,” said Maureen Casey, Director of Military and Veterans Affairs at JPMorgan Chase, which is sponsoring the New Orleans regional conference.
V-WISE has already impacted more than 1,000 female veterans and military spouses in over 40 states and across all service branches and eras, with more than 56 percent of V-WISE graduates starting or growing a venture after attending a conference.
V-WISE New Orleans attendees will also be invited to compete in major business plan competitions open only to graduates of IVMF’s V-WISE, Boots to Business and Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) training programs, including the second Citi Realizing Your Dream Business Plan Competition, a national initiative designed to recognize veteran entrepreneurs with the best business plans. In May 2015, 12 winners will take home $130,000 in seed funding from the Citi Foundation.
Among the veterans aided by V-WISE is past graduate Kristina Guerrero, a former U.S. Air Force C-130 pilot who will be a special guest at V-WISE New Orleans. The grand prize winner of last year’s Citi Realizing Your Dream Business Competition, Guerrero will appear on ABC’s “Shark Tank” entrepreneurship competition on Friday, January 16.
“Regional conferences like V-WISE New Orleans ensure that we are helping to connect women all across the country with the tools and education necessary to be business leaders in their communities,” said Barb Carson, Acting Associate Administrator for the SBA’s Office of Veterans Business Development.
IVMF will host three more regional conferences in 2015, bringing the program to Washington, D.C., Boston, Mass., and Kansas City, Mo. To learn more about V-WISE and to apply online for future conferences, visit http://vets.syr.edu/vwise/.
