IVMF joins SBA, PBS, and Wikipedia to launch program promoting resources for veteran-owned small businesses
James Schmeling, IVMF managing director for programming, joined the Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, Maria Contreras-Sweet, PBS Veterans Initiative Senior Director Ron Pierce, and representatives from Wikipedia and SBA’s Office of Veterans Business Development (OVBD) in New York City today to launch “The Community Challenge,” an initiative to seek cities where local officials and PBS affiliates collaborate to expand and publicize resources for small businesses owned by veterans and military spouses.
PBS, OVBD and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (IVMF) shared video content, which PBS will use to produce a film highlighting successful veteran-owned small businesses that have benefited from SBA resources and programs on multi-media channels (web platforms, television, print).
The communities will be featured during National Veterans Small Business Week in November 2015. Community Challenge efforts may include local businesses encouraging larger corporations to choose veteran-owned small businesses in their supply chains, outreach to and commitments from community lenders to support veteran access to capital, and public recognition and support of local veteran-owned small businesses.
This event is one of several to be held during National Small Business Week (May 4-8).
