Cornell University to Host Hospitality-Focused Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV)

Post 9-11 vets to converge on campus, Sept. 26 – Oct. 4, for intensive nine-day residency to learn the ‘nuts and bolts’ of business ownership in the restaurant and food & beverage industries

– On Saturday, September 26, 14 disabled veterans will converge at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration (SHA) to expand on the traits (resilience, focus and leadership) they developed in the military, and learn the basics of business ownership in the restaurant and food & beverage industries during the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV).

Hosted in partnership between the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (IVMF) and the Leland C. and Mary M. Pillsbury Institute for Hospitality Entrepreneurship at Cornell University, the EBV helps post-9/11 veterans with service-connected disabilities develop skills and tools needed to launch and maintain successful businesses.

EBV is a three-phase program, beginning with a three-week online instructor-led course. Participants have already begun to shape business plans and learn business language during the online phase. During the second phase, participants will complete an intensive nine-day residency (September 26 – October 4, 2015) on the campus at Cornell University, learning the “nuts and bolts” of business ownership from established entrepreneurs and educators. Following the residency, EBV graduates will receive access to a year-long support and mentorship program through the EBV Technical Assistance Program.

The EBV at Cornell University is the first to offer a specialized program focused on hospitality entrepreneurship. Sessions are led by more than a dozen School of Hotel Administration faculty members as well as other faculty members from across the Cornell University campus; speakers from the Culinary Institute of America, the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University, and the U.S. Small Business Administration; and finance and community banking professionals.

The fourth Cornell University EBV program takes place September 26 – October 4, 2015. Headlining the September 26 opening ceremony will be Edgard Sanchez, a 2014 EBV-Cornell participant and chef and owner of C’est Tout Bon 2 Eat, and Maureen Casey, Chief Operating Officer of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (IVMF).

Closing ceremonies will be held the evening of October 3, with guest speaker Joshua Bean, a 2014 EBV-Cornell participant and owner of First Ward House, and Danny Lafayette, owner of Lafayette Hotels.

Neil Tarallo, senior lecturer at SHA and program director of the Cornell University EBV, said, “Restaurants, food trucks, catering businesses, and other areas of the food & beverage industry offer great opportunities for veteran entrepreneurs, and there is no better place to learn about this industry than at the Cornell School of Hotel Administration. This is our fourth EBV program at Cornell, and every year I am humbled by how many SHA faculty, staff, and students go out of their way to support our EBV participants.”

How impactful are graduates of the national Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) program?  The following results speak for themselves …

  • 1,236 EBV graduates/aspiring entrepreneurs trained;
  • $196 million (and growing) in revenue has been generated by EBV graduate businesses;
  • 68% of EBV graduates have started their own businesses; 92% of those are still in business today;
  • 1 out of every 4 EBV graduate businesses grosses over $100,000/year
  • 72 – The average number of people employed by an EBV graduate
  • EBV graduate businesses currently employ 1,886 people

The program was launched at Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management in 2007. Since the original class, the IVMF has expanded the EBV consortium to a total of ten universities throughout the U.S., including Cornell University.  Assistance from the U.S. Small Business Administration, corporate partners and donors allows post-9/11 veterans and transitioning service members with service-connected disabilities to attend the program cost-free.

“EBV has produced more than 1,200 graduates since 2007, with 68 percent having launched a new venture after completing the EBV program,” said AJ Florkowski, EBV National Program Director. “The IVMF at Syracuse University is excited to work with Cornell University again to support our nation’s veterans and help them create and maintain their own small businesses.”

About The Leland C. and Mary M. Pillsbury Institute for Hospitality Entrepreneurship

Founded in 1922, Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration (SHA) was the first collegiate program in hospitality management.
