James Gilchrest

Gilchrest is a Program Assistant of Community Advising for the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF). He is responsible for support and assistance in relationships with community agencies in the AmericaServes program.

Prior to joining the IVMF in June 2017, he worked as a student ambassador and resident assistant for The University of Alaska Fairbanks in Fairbanks, Alaska. There, he was responsible for creating community programs and providing resources to prospective students. Gilchrest currently serves as a member of the Alaska National Guard. He served four years as a military policeman in the Army Guard, and now is serving in the Air Guard as a personnel specialist. Gilchrest deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for a year in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Management from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, with a minor in General Business, and is currently enrolled to obtain his Master’s in Security and Disaster Management from University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Gilchrest is a Newman’s Own Fellow, a fellowship funded by the Newman’s Own Foundation for recent college graduates designed to provide an enriching experience of nonprofit work. Through his year-long Fellowship with IVMF, Gilchrest is expected to develop a strong sense of civic responsibility, cultivate a deeper understanding of philanthropy, learn new skills, and better connect his values and passions to career choices.
