The May 2014 IVMF Veteran Homelessness Report features articles and a veteran success story from the US Territory of Puerto Rico. Many thousands of Puerto Ricans served their nation honorably in present and past conflicts and in peacetime. However, the challenges and successes of veterans living in the US Territories to escape homelessness and obtain secure economic futures through employment are often not given as much attention as their mainland veteran peers.
The extraordinary work of Alianza Municipal de Servicios Integrados (AMSI, Inc.) in helping Puerto Rican veterans who are homeless get jobs, the assistance being given by their employer partner, General Meat Trading (GMT) to open up job positions at their business and Navy veteran Miguel’s personal story of success provides inspiration for other programs operating in the US Territories and on the mainland and the veterans they serve.
This issue also highlights the publication of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness’ just released 2013 Update to Opening Doors: Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness.
