Five Ways Student Veterans Bring Value to the Classroom

MBAforVeteransStudent veterans are great contributors to the classroom and tend to stand out among their classmates. Their experiences enable them to look at things from a different perspective and solve problems in unique ways. Here are a few reasons why professors enjoy having student veterans in their classrooms:

Perspective: Coming from a high-risk working environment with tight deadlines, veterans excel at articulating and demonstrating how concepts and ideas learned in the classroom apply to real world settings. If perspective and application is needed, who better than a student veteran to offer first-hand perspective?

Team Building: Veterans are highly effective at working with others toward a common goal. They bring battle-tested organizational and interpersonal skills to the table. When faced with a group project, veterans can easily adapt themselves to the needs of the group.

Resiliency: If you ask some people, they would say school is filled with adversity, hardships, and hurdles. Students go through these together and overcome them through hard work and collaboration. Multiple studies have indicated that military veterans exhibit high levels of resilient behavior. Discipline and determination are both keys to excelling in class.

Innovation: Some of the biggest innovations are born under stressful, unthinkable circumstances. Coping with tough situations and coming up with innovative solutions to address challenges is something veterans are used to doing. Student veterans are highly efficient and effective student innovators, continuing to solve problems in new ways.

Cross Cultural Strengths: Working well in an educational setting demands a degree of cross-cultural competence. The military—a highly diverse organization to begin with—demands that its service members operate effectively with both teammates and other individuals of different cultures and nationalities. Many veterans thrive in settings like this.

Veterans looking to continue their education should consider Syracuse University’s graduate management degrees designed with veterans in mind as well as all of the undergraduate and graduate programs offered by a school committed for over 70 years to serve those who have served.

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) for Veterans teaches the tools of business, including accounting, economics, finance, marketing and organizational behavior from a managerial perspective in a 14-month accelerated format. Prospective students are also encouraged to consider the online MBA@Syracuse with international residencies.

The Master of Science in Entrepreneurship (MSE) degree prepares students to become leaders of one of 2.4 million veteran-owned businesses employing 5.8 million people, with four focus areas: Social, Corporate, Family Business, and New Ventures.

Special considerations like accepting some military experience as credit, offering additional flexibility, and a wealth of unique resources make an education from Syracuse University an excellent experience for student veterans.
