Leading Practice Briefs: Advancing Veteran Success in Higher Education
Introduction
More than 1 million veterans or their dependents are taking advantage of VA education benefits each year, while higher education is in a state of rapid transformation.
In May 2016, the IVMF launched a new series of Leading Practices Briefs to highlight colleges and universities implementing innovative programs supporting student veterans. Through these case highlights drawn from vocational schools, traditional four-year colleges and universities, and other learning environments, we identify best practices to promote veterans’ educational attainment and entry into rewarding careers.
We monitor trends in higher education and partner with institutions of higher learning to examine and highlight innovations in the classroom, on campus, and with employers and community partners. This initiative provides practical advice to college and university staff and faculty on how to best support student veteran success in higher education and beyond through the analysis and dissemination of leading practices.

The first of our Leading Practice Briefs highlights three colleges’ creative use of external funding in the design and implementation of vocational instruction for veterans and transitioning service members.
