Each month the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) releases their employment and unemployment report. Below are some key insights from those reports focused on veteran employment.

The Employment Situation of Veterans – March 2025


On April 4th, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that employment rose by 228,000 in March, and the unemployment rate changed little at 4.2 percent. Job gains occurred in health care, in social assistance, and in transportation and warehousing. Employment also increased in retail trade, partially reflecting the return of workers from a strike. Federal government employment declined.[1] For veterans, unemployment decreased from 4.1 percent in February 2025 to 3.8 percent in March 2025. Post-9/11 veteran unemployment also decreased, from 4.3 percent in February to 3.1 percent in March. The unemployment trend continues to vary across different veteran demographic groups.

The Employment Situation of Veterans – February 2025


On March 7th, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that employment rose by 151,000 in February, and the unemployment rate changed little at 4.1 percent. Employment trended up in health care, financial activities, transportation and warehousing, and social assistance.  Federal government employment declined.[1] For veterans, unemployment decreased from 4.2 percent in January 2025 to 4.1 percent in February 2025. Post-9/11 veteran unemployment also decreased, from 4.7 percent in January to 4.3 percent in February. The unemployment trend continues to vary across different veteran demographic groups.

The Employment Situation of Veterans – January 2025


On February 7th 2025, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that employment rose by 143,000 in January, and the unemployment rate edged down to 4.0 percent. Job gains occurred in health care, retail trade, and social assistance. Employment declined in the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction industry.[1] For veterans, unemployment increased from 2.8 percent in December 2024 to 4.2 percent in January 2025. Post-9/11 veteran unemployment also rose, from 3.9 percent in December to 4.7 percent in January. The unemployment trend continues to vary across different veteran demographic groups.
