In Syracuse University's history, commitments to veterans and military students can trace back to World War I. SU laid the groundwork for what would evolve into the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC), a pivotal institution that has shaped the lives of countless individuals.

The D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families understands these unique and complex challenges for military-affiliated entrepreneurs. And its why, through our partnerships with public and private entities, we channeled more than $275,000 this year to our training program participants so they can start and scale their businesses.

In the post COVID-19 pandemic world, working from home is no longer a unique or awkward concept. Some organizations and businesses around the world struggled to adapt to the new business model, and others have started rolling back those remote worker policies as they pull their workforce back into the office environment. For the D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), operating with remote employees scattered across multiple time zones was already a normal part of the business day.

A Syracuse University student and staff member are among 50 scholars and professionals participating in the Stand-To Veteran Leadership Program from the George W. Bush Institute. Student John Nipper, completing his master in public administration (MPA) degree at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, and Kathryn Warren, program manager for the D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families Onward to Opportunity (O2O) program in Southern California, are honored to represent Syracuse University as the best place for veterans.

44% of veteran entrepreneurs identified navigating business resources within their community is difficult (2022 findings). To combat this issue, Syracuse University’s D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families is one of 8 tier-1 Hubs awarded the Community Navigator Pilot Program (CNPP) grant from the U.S Small Business Administration (SBA) dedicated to break down the difficult barrier of resource navigation within the military entrepreneurship community. An initiative of the Biden-Harris administration’s American Rescue Plan, the SBA Community Navigator Pilot Program is designed to reduce barriers that underrepresented and underserved entrepreneurs often face and improve access to programs and resources they need to recover, grow, or start businesses.

Recently, the Texas Community of Practice gathered in the Rio Grande Valley for a workshop on grant writing.  Arlene Siller, Ph. D., Founder and CEO of Ascend Nonprofit & Business Solutions, LLC walked the in-person and virtual group through a grant readiness conversation, ensuring non-profits and community providers are prepared tso turn an open grant opportunity into a successful, funded project. Here's what we learned:

Last Saturday, SyracuseServes joined Clear Path For Veterans as its second Back to School Festival. The event was open to all veteran, military, and first responder families. Guests were able to enjoy remarkable scenery at Clear Path's venue while also participating in various activities such as a bounce house, sand art, dunk tank, and carnival games.
